Amazon Rufus is changing the way customers shop on Amazon - and with it, how you get found as a seller. The AI assistant already has 250 million users and generates an estimated $10 billion in additional revenue. Anyone who doesn't adapt their listings will become invisible.
From keyword search to AI conversation
Rufus doesn't rank - Rufus selects. Anyone who wants to be recommended as a seller has to understand how the AI thinks. Here you'll learn everything you need to know.
1. What is Amazon Rufus?
Amazon Rufus is a generative AI shopping assistant built on Amazon Bedrock. Instead of simply listing search results, Rufus holds a conversation with the customer: it answers questions, compares products and gives personalised recommendations - all in natural language.
How does Rufus work technically?
- Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) - Rufus accesses Amazon's product catalogue, reviews, Q&A sections and external sources in real time before generating an answer
- Semantic Similarity Model - Rufus understands meaning and context instead of just matching keywords. If a customer asks "How do I remove gel nails?", Rufus recommends acetone products - even if the word never appears in the question
- Visual Label Tagging - Rufus reads and understands text on product images and infographics
2. The numbers behind Rufus
The growth figures are impressive: monthly active users rose by 140% year-on-year, and interactions even by 210%. On Black Friday 2025, 38% of all Amazon shopping sessions were already Rufus-assisted - and the conversion rate was 3.5x higher than in normal sessions.
$10 billion in additional revenue per year
Amazon CEO Andy Jassy confirmed that Rufus is on track to generate $10 billion in additional annual revenue. Internally, Amazon expects over $700 million in operating profit from Rufus alone in 2026.
3. New Rufus features in 2026
Account Memory
Rufus now remembers each customer's individual purchasing behaviour. Whether trail runner, hobby cook or pet owner - the recommendations get ever more personal. Integration with Kindle, Prime Video and Audible is also planned, in order to build even deeper user profiles.
Agentic AI: Auto-Buy & price alerts
This is the game changer: Rufus can now act autonomously. Customers can set price alerts and Rufus buys automatically once the target price is reached. The feature adds products to the cart automatically - the customer only has to confirm.
Advanced search
Customers can now search by activity, event or purpose. Instead of "running shoes", the customer types "I'm running my first marathon in the autumn" - and Rufus recommends suitable shoes with cushioning for beginners, running socks and nutrition gels.
4. What does Rufus mean for you as a seller?
Selection instead of ranking
The A10 algorithm lists products and the customer decides. Rufus selects products and explains to the customer why this particular product is the best choice - based on reviews, product details and the user profile. That completely changes the rules of the game.
Attributes are mandatory
Product attributes are one of the strongest AI signals. If you don't provide structured information, Rufus has nothing reliable to compare. Attribute completeness is no longer a nice-to-have - it's a visibility requirement.
External authority counts
Rufus weights external sources more heavily than the information on your own product page. Independent reviews, test reports and mentions on trustworthy websites feed directly into the recommendations. This means: Authentic reviews are more important than ever.
5. How to optimise your listings for Rufus
Title
Write natural, descriptive titles instead of keyword chains. Rufus understands semantic relationships - a title like "Premium Stainless Steel Thermal Mug 500ml - Keeps Coffee Hot for 12 Hours" works better than "Thermal Mug Stainless Steel Coffee Tea Insulated BPA-free".
Bullet points: feature + use + benefit
Rufus cites individual bullet points as a data source. Each bullet must work on its own and answer at least two typical customer questions.
Example format:
"Rust-free. Dishwasher-safe. Durable."
"The chrome-plated surface forms an impermeable barrier against oxidation and stays completely rust-free even after daily dishwasher cycles - for years of use without any loss of quality."
Recommended structure: three product-focused bullet points and two audience-focused ones. That way you cover both functionality and emotional reasons to buy.
A+ Content & images
- A+ Content with FAQ - Build in category-relevant questions and answers. Rufus accesses A+ Content directly
- Infographic images - Rufus reads text overlays on images. Your second image should be text-rich and informative
- Lifestyle images - Show products in use. Rufus rates contextual images higher than plain cut-outs
- Backend keywords - Fill them in completely, but phrase them naturally
6. Challenges & limitations
Rufus isn't perfect. There are currently a few issues you should be aware of:
- No reporting - Amazon provides no data on how often Rufus recommends your product or how customers reach your listing via Rufus
- No direct optimisation - There is no "Rufus score" or specific tools for Rufus optimisation in Seller Central
- Hallucinations - Rufus occasionally invents product specifications, quotes wrong prices or recommends unavailable products
- Lack of transparency - Exactly how Rufus generates recommendations is a black box
What you should do now
Rufus isn't a trend - it's the new reality. Here is your checklist:
- Fill in product attributes completely - Every empty field is a missed opportunity with Rufus
- Rewrite bullet points - Format: feature + why it matters + concrete benefit
- Add A+ Content with FAQ - Answer category-typical questions
- Upgrade images - Infographics with text overlays, lifestyle shots in use
- Phrase titles naturally - Away from keyword chains, towards descriptive sentences
- Prioritise reviews - External authority is a key factor for Rufus
38% of all shopping sessions already run through Rufus - and the trend is rising. Whoever optimises now secures an advantage before the competition wakes up.
